What Is Professional Knapsack Sprayer

Professional knapsack sprayer (also known as a backpack sprayer) is carried on your back. A compression sprayer is cylindrical in shape and is normally carried on a shoulder. Which sprayer is the best for you depends upon the type of work you are doing. professional knapsack sprayers generally have larger capacity tanks and are designed for spraying large areas as opposed to compression sprayers that can be used for any type of job, either large or small.

Benefits of a Professional Knapsack Sprayer

A professional knapsack sprayer provides you with the opportunity to move about more freely with your spraying and are highly versatile.

Versatility
With their precision spray gun tips, professional knapsack sprayers provide the ability to treat individual plants with a wide variety of chemicals, insecticides, pesticides and more. This allows for the specific treatment of individual plants without the risk of damage to neighboring plants. The portability of a professional knapsack sprayer also increases the versatility of your spraying tremendously.

Ease of use
Depending on the type of professional knapsack sprayer that you use, spraying for an extended period of time has never been easier.
With a lever action professional knapsack sprayer, you are able to seamlessly convert the lever from left to right hand operation should you need to reduce hand fatigue during spraying.

Thoughtful design
Designed with the homeowner and commercial user in mind, professional knapsack sprayers are light as a feather and boast incredible comfort with adjustable shoulder straps.

How Do Professional Knapsack Sprayers Work

To understand the how a professional knapsack sprayer works, it is helpful to know about their fundamental components. In the simplest terms, this piece of equipment is a hands-free tool that you wear on your back. It allows you to freely walk around while applying fertilizer, pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, or water as required.
There are five main components to a professional knapsack sprayer:

1

The tank
Professional knapsack sprayers are constructed of polyethylene plastic, which is a durable and chemical-resistant material. UV protection is also provided by polyethylene plastic, which is essential for equipment that is exposed to ample sunlight.
A tank is a storage reservoir for liquids before they are sprayed from the sprayer. Smaller tanks range in size from two to four gallons, which are ideal sizes for household and professional use. Professional knapsack sprayers with larger, heavier tanks are also available to service larger sites.

2

The pump
The pump moves the liquid from the tank to the nozzle. The valves and seals keep the liquid at pressure until you squeeze the wand's trigger or pumping lever, allowing it to flow out of the device.

3

The wand
The wand allows you to spray your target, even in places where it would be difficult to reach such as eaves troughs or under kitchen counters. The wand's design allows you to reach remote or hazardous areas safely while keeping a safe level of separation from the user.

4

The nozzle
The nozzle is perhaps the most essential component of a sprayer, as it regulates the flow and pattern of the fluids being sprayed. Professional knapsack sprayers come with a variety of nozzles that provide for various types of sprays, such as adjustable cone, fan, and pin streams.

5

Straps
Professional knapsack sprayers are designed to be portable, so they come with straps for mobility and convenience. The weight is evenly distributed by attaching the sprayer to your shoulders.

How to Use a Professional Knapsack Sprayer

Assemble your sprayer (if new) following the manufactures instructions.

Ensure you are fully prepared with the appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) including rubber boots, coveralls, gloves and a face shield.

Ensure the sprayer is calibrated to the required dosage – see our guide on How To Calibrate a Sprayer.

Fill the spray tank with the required amount of water, we recommend always reading and following the manufacturers label and instructions before use and using the rate suggested.

Measure the chemical needed in a mixing jug in a safe environment. If the chemical container is new and is sealed with a foil, simply turn the cap upside down, press onto the foil seal and twist to remove.

Add chemical into the sprayer with the water. We recommend not mixing more than what is needed.

Triple rinse the measuring jug.

Agitate the sprayer to make sure the liquid is fully mixed.

Now you are ready to spray. Put the sprayer on your back and adjust until comfy.

The Importance of Professional Knapsack Sprayer Maintenance and Replacing Parts

Regularly servicing your professional knapsack sprayer is an extremely important job. If parts of the sprayer are becoming old and worn this could result in less effective spraying and could also shorten the life of the knapsack sprayer itself. It is also important to check the knapsack sprayer before the spraying season as there can be nothing worse than wanting to start spraying and realising that there is an issue.

To get the most out of your knapsack it is vital to ensure that they are cleaned after every use. It is standard practice to rinse the tank three times and clean it with a tank & equipment cleaner to ensure that there is no contamination left. Unless washed out thoroughly, residues may kill the grass and require expensive and time consuming repair. Not only will triple rinsing help to prolong the life of the sprayer, it will also make sure that different chemical products won't get mixed and have a negative impact on future spraying.

There are two types of pump found on a backpack sprayer: piston & diaphragm. In both of these the rubber seals & o-rings are most at risk of perishing or cracking. Piston operated sprayers often require the cup seal to be greased. In the diaphragm knapsack the large rubber diaphragm underneath often requires replacement after a few years – especially when using 'drying' chemicals, such as iron sulphate. Bad or damaged seals can easily result in leakages which would affect both the environment and the operator.

Spray lances are also susceptible to getting damaged from being trodden on, driven over or nuts tightened to splitting. Hairline cracks in lances will end up wasting product and potentially affecting non-target areas. Triggers often get neglected and in-line filters within the hand grip especially need regular cleaning. The brass piston in the trigger fouls, leaks and gets stuck after years of neglect and flat washers often get lost over time. The good news is all these can usually be replaced.

Choosing the Right Knapsack Sprayer

How do you choose the right sprayer for your needs? Here are a few things to consider.

1

Piston Pump vs. Diaphragm Pump
The biggest difference between backpack sprayers is the type of pump. The type of application and the chemical being sprayed should drive your choice.
Piston – A piston pump is the better option when spraying anything at a distance, such as trees and bushes, because of its higher pressure. They are normally a little less expensive and easier to repair. However, they aren't as durable as a diaphragm pump. Piston pumps should not be used with heavier or sticky chemicals and should not be used with a wettable powder. In addition, a piston pump is not completely sealed and can drip on to your skin or clothing ("blue butt"). Piston pumps work best with lighter chemicals, such as herbicides and insecticides.
Diaphragm – Diaphragm pumps don't deliver as much pressure as piston, making them ideal for use in close application scenarios such as weed killing. But the diaphragm pump is more durable to chemical damage. If you are using products such as wettable powders, bleach solutions or other corrosive chemicals this is the best solution.

2

Manual vs. Battery
A recent innovation in our industry, backpack sprayers now have a battery option available. The main benefit is consistency of application. With a battery unit you are not relying on the operator to maintain a consistent pressure on the trigger. With constant pressure, you are also using the right amount of product each time. It also improves productivity by up to 3x versus manual sprayers. Battery sprayers with an 18-volt battery can run up to 4 hours (50 gallons) and can significantly reduce operator fatigue.

3

Other Considerations
● Make sure the tank you choose has UV to avoid damaging the chemical when left in the elements.
● Larger tank size means less time refilling. But make sure it's not too large to ensure comfort during application.
● Stream should be steady with a consistent droplet size to ensure uniform coverage on the plant.
● Pressure needs to be sufficient to reach all areas of the plant.

Uses of Professional Knapsack Sprayer

Professional knapsack sprayer does not serve just one purpose, instead, it has numerous uses that will benefit the overall health and management of the crops:

Liquid fertiliser application
The sprayer is loaded with liquid fertiliser to efficiently distribute the fertiliser to the crops. The main purpose is to supply the crops with nutrients, and it is extremely effective due to its ability to target specific crops without losing liquid to evaporation or weather conditions such as wind.

Spraying water
A water sprayer is used to spray water on plants and crops with the goal to hydrate them. They are high-pressure sprayers that are used over small areas for irrigation. Likewise, before crops are harvested, they are sprayed with fresh water to clean any chemicals away that may have been left behind.

Spraying herbicides or fungicides
These are mixed with water and sprayed onto crops to prevent any fungi from developing or unwanted vegetation from growing.

Pest control
A crop sprayer is extremely effective in controlling pests, and pesticides are mixed with water and sprayed on the affected areas of crops to eliminate infestation.
