1. Brightness

The higher the brightness, the better, but most outdoor headlights will not be very bright, otherwise it will not only affect the life of the light source, generate heat and other problems, but also cause excessive power supply or insufficient battery life. It is best to have a dimming function for hiking night trails, and the high beam brightness should at least illuminate objects 10 meters away.

2. Color temperature

Most people think that high color temperature lamps are brighter. In fact, the slightly yellowish color temperature of about 4300k is more suitable for human eyes. The color temperature above 5600 (that is, blue light) will lose the level of human eye perception and cannot see the details. So in general, car lights and hunting lights have a color temperature of about 4300k.

3. Light source

The size of the light source is related to the hardness of the light. On a cloudy day, the entire sky is covered by clouds, so the glasses will be very comfortable, but on a sunny day, the difference between light and shade will feel a little dazzling. Therefore, the larger the light source, such as the addition of a diffuser, the light will be softer, and it will be easier to perceive three-dimensional objects. In the case of walking, it is also easier to detect obstacles, such as tree branches, rocks or small slopes that melt into the environment. It will be safer, but correspondingly The irradiation distance is also shortened. So generally long-range lights are not covered, and walking headlights are better. Camp lights are usually added, otherwise the lights will go dark.

4. Whether there is a difference in light and dark in the light area, and whether there is a spotlight

In order to meet the requirements of combat and defense, strong light searchlights generally try to achieve uniform light distribution within the light area without scattering outside the light area (completely no light is good), which is one of the reasons why strong light searchlights are more expensive. However, in general outdoor lighting, there is a bright spot in the center of the light zone that can illuminate the target, and there is a certain range of scattering around to see the road or the environment. This certain range of scattering is beneficial in the field. Therefore, it is not appropriate to use tactical lights for walking at night or for daily use. Outdoor headlights are better.

5. Protection

Generally expressed by ip level. Generally speaking, ordinary hiking only needs to reach ip43 protection, which can prevent light rain and occasional falling into the water, and the price is very cheap. In high-intensity and severe weather, ip67 is better. It can be completely immersed in water in a short time without hindrance. It is very reliable, but the price will be much higher. There are also diving headlights, but both the price and the volume and weight are often not suitable for daily use.

6. Portability

Many so-called strong light searchlights are designed for defense and firearms, and are not suitable for daily lighting. They often have to be held with one hand free. Even if it is fixed on a backpack or head with a strap, it is far from light and easy to use because of the weight and shape. But the flashlight can be easily made brighter and longer battery life, which is also at the expense of portability. In many cases, freeing up two hands will bring more convenience and safety, and the headlights fixed on the webbing are more reliable and will not fall loose. Therefore, it is not recommended to replace the headlights with a flashlight.

7. Endurance

Many power sources such as alkaline batteries are not suitable for lamps. Ni-MH batteries have a faster life and voltage decay but have better low temperature performance.
